The Clean Water Pond
On the north side of Deng Xiaoping’s Former Residence lies the Clean Water Pond, covering an area of 14,000 square meters, where the peasant households in Paifang Village used to do the washing or bathe. In his childhood, Deng Xiaoping and several other children would meet here after school, shuttling across the Pond, playing with each other or diving for fish. The pond is a reminder of those happy moments of Deng Xiaoping’s childhood. A tourist ever told me that Pond seems in the shape of the map of China. That way, if I could say, young Deng Xiao had had the entire motherland in mind, for in this clean pond of his home place he had had “swum” throughout every corner of his motherland.
