The ficus virens before us is an indigenous ancient banyan tree, aged over 170 years old. The old tree brings back memories of Deng Xiaoping’s childhood, when he had happy hours climbing up the tree and playing about. Any idea about his home place reminds him of the tree. Originally, there used to be a flagstone path around the tree, and it was the only way leading to his school. It saw all the hardships on his way to schooling. Surviving the vicissitudes of a century, the ancient banyan tree has witnessed the great changes that have taken place in Paifang Village. At the same time, the tree is looked up to as “the Auspicious Tree” by the simple and kind-hearted villagers.
